Freckles treatment helps reduce small pigmented spots caused by sun exposure and genetics. Dermatologists use advanced skin treatments to improve skin tone and restore a clearer, more even complexion.
Causes
Freckles develop mostly due to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, causing overproduction of melanin pigment.
Other causes include:
- Genetics: Several genes are associated with freckling.
- Xeroderma pigmentosum: A rare condition that causes increased sensitivity to ultraviolet light, such as the sun.
Types of Freckles
There are two main types of freckles: ephelides and solar lentigines.
Ephelides
Commonly referred to as freckles, ephelides are flat spots that range from red to tan or brown in colour. They usually appear in early childhood with sun exposure and may become more noticeable during summer while fading or disappearing in winter. These spots are typically smaller than 3 mm and are commonly found on the face, neck, chest, and arms.
Solar Lentigines
Solar lentigines are yellow to dark brown patches with well-defined borders that develop later in life due to chronic sun exposure. They commonly appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, forearms, hands, chest, shoulders, back, and lower legs.
Treatment
These brown spots are usually diagnosed clinically, and the following treatment options may be recommended:
- Topical treatments: Creams containing hydroquinone, retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (such as glycolic acid), and kojic acid help lighten freckles.
- Chemical peels: Remove superficial layers of skin and help in gradual fading of freckles.
- Cryotherapy: Uses controlled freezing to reduce pigmented spots.
- Laser therapy: ND:YAG and other pigment-specific lasers target and destroy excess pigment without damaging surrounding skin, making them effective for sun spots.
🛡️ Prevention
Freckles are almost always harmless, but it is best to prevent them by following adequate sun protection measures and daily use of sunscreen.
Always apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher to all exposed skin before going outside. Sunscreen should be used every day, even on cloudy days and during winter. Reapply every two hours or sooner if you are swimming or sweating.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and lightweight long-sleeved shirts and pants while outdoors.
Avoid peak ultraviolet (UV) exposure hours, usually between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
